Yangpu is the largest urban district of Shanghai with a population of 1.3 million people. Yangpu has worked hard to transition from an industry-driven economy to a knowledge and innovation-driven economy. Through joint efforts, Yangpu became the National Pilot Innovation District in 2010 and then the “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” Model Base in 2016. Today, Yangpu is home to over 30,000 companies. Among them are nearly 7,000 are technology enterprises. Yangpu is also home to 14 universities such as Fudan University and Tongji University.
A partnership between Palo Alto and Yangpu District was established with the assistance of the Bay Area Council which is invested in supporting the building of stronger ties between Bay Area communities and business and counterparts in China. Palo Alto’s initial partnership was solidified through a visit to Yangpu District in Shanghai in December 2012, attended by Mayor Yeh, Council Member Shepherd, and then Councilmember-elect Berman, and City Manager Keene. During the initial three-year term, the primary focus was on an educational exchange of students, with a pilot summer youth program for Palo Alto students visiting Shanghai done for the summer of 2013. Mayor Burt signed a renewal of the partnership to run until June 9, 2019 which was ratified by City Council in November 2016. The official signing ceremony occurred in Palo Alto on March 5, 2018. Palo Alto and Yangpu are both part of larger, thriving metropolitan regions. The cities are considered centers of innovation sharing key interests in the concept of Smart Cities. Palo Alto and Yangpu are homes to two of the great universities in the world and both also share a strong interest in the education of their children. Both Yangpu and Palo Alto are leaders in civic sustainability efforts. |
